Of mice and men questions between and beyond the line

Why does George shoot Lenny in the back of the head?

I think George kills Lenny to put him out of his misery. George knew that Lenny had nothing ahead of him except more pain and hurt. So he did the most humane thing someone could do to someone who was suffering. This could be related to something that happened earlier in the book when they shot Candys’ dog to put him out of his misery. Just as Carlson did to Candys dog George did to Lenny to spare him from any further pain.

What does the young pup symbolize?

I think the young pup is a symbol of many things. Its young age represents the thought of hope and dreams. On top of that I think you could compare the young pup to Lenny. Just like the puppy Lenny is full of hope and is innocence. While the puppy is vulnerable to the physical outside world because it is small and fragile. Lenny is big, but yet still vulnerable due to his mental state. This is what I think the puppy symbolizes and represents.

Why doesn’t Curlys wife have a name?
I believe curlys wife doesn’t have a name for two main reason. The first of the two being that she wasn’t just meant to represent one person, but yet the whole population in this time period. I also think she is suppose to been seen as curlys property not wife. This is because every time she is mentioned so is curly like it is to show that he owns her. This is why I think Curlys wife doesn’t have a name.

Is Lenny afraid of George?
I think Lenny is afraid of George because of his actions towards George. When George tells Lenny to do something Lenny listens to George not out of love but out of fear. He doesn’t argue with him he just reluctantly listens. Even though he is bigger than George his actions show that he is afraid of George.

Why do George and Lennie keep moving from job to job?

George and Lenny keep moving from job to job due to woman problems with Lenny. Lenny whether intentional or not always seems to be doing something with women. First in weed he feels on a girls dress and when she said stop he wouldn’t let go, and because of this the girl screamed rape and he got chased out of town. Then at their new job when he begins to rub Curlys wife hair and told to stop he wouldn’t let go. As a result Curlys wife began to scream and while in a struggle to keep her quiet he accidently killed her by snapping her neck. These are the reasons why I think George and Lenny have to move from job to job.

Compare the relationship of George and Lenny to that of another you know.
Lenny and Georges reminds me of a relationship between brothers. Lenny being the younger, playful, and childish brother. George being the older, responsible, and caretaker brother of the two. They work together just like any team of brothers to help each other. The relationship is a two way street with one helping the other.
One because George takes charge of the two as would an older brother would. If something is happening George takes charge and tries to solve the situation. George takes the lead and Lenny follows in his footsteps as a younger brother would to an older brother. George also it’s the more responsible of the two like when he held on to Lennys work card because he knew that if Lenny had it he would lose it.
On top of that Lenny has a very playful side to him, while George is always serious. Lenny likes to play with animals and play games. From the start of the book to the end Lenny is always trying to do something fun. Lenny also has a very childish mind and not so reliable like a younger brother. George is always thinking and planning out his and Lenny’s next move.
Lastly the way they act towards each other is so similar to that of brothers. George is always putting Lenny down like and older brother does to his younger. But you know deep down George is just looking out for Lenny and being protective like an older brother. Lennys actions towards George are also very much like a little brothers. When George tells him to do something he does it and listens as a younger brother would listen to his older brother.
In conclusion Lenny and Georges relationship reminds me of that of a younger and older brother. George being the older and serious of the two making him more like an older brother. And Lenny being playful and childish makes him more like the younger brother. Even though they might not be brothers they sure do act like it.

5 Things I learned about my citys' revenue
1. Philadelphia gets the most of its money from wage taxes.
2. The lowest amount of it money comes from other funds, which it doesn't say is.
3. Philadelphia also gets alot of its income from other goverments
4. Wage Tax means employment income.
5. Philadelphia's property taxes rates are low compared to the standards of other big citys.

5 things I learned about expenditures.
1. Philadelphia spends the most money on benefits and pensions.
2. Spends the least elected offices and libraries.
3. Spends more money on police then the fire department.
4. Even spends more on prisons then the fire department.
5. The second biggest amount is spent on other which is compiled of Community College subsidy, Convention Center subsidy, Indemnities, Philadelphia Gas Works, School District, SEPTA.

My final budget revenue came out to 140.2 million which is about 30 million less then the citys. I noticed that balenceing a budget is much harder then i thought. And that the city made a lot more cuts then i did for the budget.

Do opposites attract, or is it easier to have relationships with your own type? Explain.

Well I think the type of relationship depends weather opposties attract or not. I think for a friend its better off to hang with people more like you since you have more in common and can get along easier. If your with someone different you might clash heads alot and not get along well. But if your goin to have a romantic relationship I believe to some degree opposites do attract. I say this because if someone is to much like you the relationship will be boring. But on the other hand if someone is to different from you, you might never see eye to eye on anything and that could cause alot of problems in the relationship. So to a certain extent i do believe that opposites attract.

How large a part does personality play in who you are? Explain.

I think your personailty has a big role in who you are. From the way you act to who you are attracted too. But I dont think you can just chatogerize someone from their type of personailty. (Ex. Guardian, Rational, etc) I dont think you can put someone in a catergoey because everyone is different and unique. Just because someone falls under one type of personailty doesnt mean they are going to be exactly how that personailty is "supposed" to be like.

Nigga??

“Wassup my nigga!” Bart asked Leon his friend. “Hey watch your language,” the teacher demanded. “I’m just saying hi to my friend,” replied Bart. “Well you don’t need to use nasty and foul language,” answered the teacher. “What nasty language the word nigga? That’s not a foul word.” Bart said.

Well is it? Is nigga really a foul and racial slur. The word nigga has been frowned upon for many years, but now somethings are different, well sorta. But what do people actually believe is the actually meaning behind the word. Different people have different views on the word at Constitution high.

Many students and teachers believe the word is offensive and that it offends people. One student stated “The ending of the word matters. Er is the worst then the A ending. If a person of a different color says the ER ending shit would pop off. Er ending means slave to me.” Most students feel the same that the ending of the word makes it racial or not.

On the other there are people that don’t believe the word is racial at all. “Words are powerful, but in the end they are just words,” stated Mr Romero. Students say it’s a word they use daily and say it openly and freely. One student said “ It’s a beautiful beautiful word, best word ever created niggas.”

Students say they see it as a word to call one of their friends or "boys." While a teacher stated "I don't think anyone should be able to use that word its offensive and people have died over it."

The context, ending, and person saying it matters weather it is racial or not some students commented. Now a days words have multiple meanings, what makes this word any different. Some people feel this word has changed and is no longer a racial slur. While other feel theres to much history behind this word and that its very offensive. They feel no one should say it due to the blood, sweat, and tears shed over this word.

Word meanings change but it seems like people are split on if the meaning of nigga has changed. One thing for sure is that the meaning of the word is just as controversial as the usage of it.

Changing of the Seasons

“Grow up act your age,” there is no accurate number I can give that will be close to the amount of times I have heard this. Maturity is something that is expected from every one of us as we grow up in our society. How we come about this ripening of age is a different experience to everyone. I see myself becoming a man and being in the summer of my life through many reasons. Responsibilities which I have been given and must complete teach me the foundation of a hard working adult. The seriousness of the level that I take my school work and the importance of a good education in my life sets my future in stone. The dramatic family problems that consist in my family have help nudge me into summer before adolescents has fully even arrived.
As you get older there’s more things you can do, but there is also more responsibilities you have to take. Responsibilities are the best way to teach someone the ethnics of hard work and the reward that is transpired through hard work. I learned this through my first job, where I was a consular at a summer camp. I worked five days a week from 9am in the morning to 3pm in the afternoon. This little taste of a job taught me the meaning of responsibility and hard work.
“Good education leads to a good life,” or so I have been told from my family a thousand times over. It is because the rest of my life rest upon the foundation which I root myself in during my high school years. If I don’t grow up and take these years seriously I can expect the fall and winter of my life won’t be nearly as joy able as I would hope it would be. With this I take my school work very serious as if it was my full time job, but to me it is a full time job and I work very hard at it to stride to be the best employee I can be.
Sadly the last thing that has caused the metamorphous from spring to summer in me is the broken thing called a family I come from. When I was younger and when my parents were together they would argue from sun up to sun down. Shortly after they separated and officially got divorce. Growing up without a father in the house has made me have to mature earlier then I was ready for. I looked to my older brother for advice and guidance, but him only being 3 years older than me made me grow up and become my own man. When my mom looks for support she knows she can pillar herself against me or my brother and that we would always be there for her.
In conclusion my change from summer to spring has happened and has morphed me into the young man I am today. Responsibilities were given to me and I took control of them and handled them. With my responsibilities comes my school work which I do to make the rest of my life a good one. And because of my family troubles it has help me put all these things together and carve me into the strapping young man I am. I am no meteorologist but I know I am in the summer of my life what season are you in?

NHD Reflection

This year for NHD i worked in a group. Our group consitited of Matt Puttman, Darrin Mills, Trevor Litchfield, Brandon Roman, and me Joseph Mattia. Our topic was the punk rock band The Ramones. Our project type was a performance. We decided to do a performance because we believed that it would be the best way to capture the legacy of the Ramones. The workload was a lot but we were able to manage between the 5 of us. I learned many intresting facts about the the Ramones. Such as bios of the band members and album dates. I also learned more then just facts about the band but also how to perform.

Some problems we encounter was acting. None of us have had any previous acting expirence so we had to over come that which was hard. We also had many group arugments on serveal differenet things. We also had problems remembering our lines. Since we were allways using a scrpit that was a work in progress lines were allways changing and that was a problem.

Things that have changed since last year is that I worked in a group this year and last year I worked as an indivdual. Also last year i did a paper while this year i did a performance instead. This year i had to deal with a team rather then just relying on myself. There were many changes but all things I i could manage in order to finish my project. In all the project was a lot of wok but due to team work we were able to overcome and finish it.
